Blue Mountain and South Street Breweries

If you prefer beer over wine, Charlottesville also has plenty of local breweries to visit. Most, if not all, offer flights or taster sizes of their brews and most also have food to purchase.  In addition to C'Ville-ian Brewery in downtown, we stopped at Blue Mountain Brewery for lunch where we tried every beer they had on tap.  My favorite by far was their Dark Hollow, a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout.

Blue Mountain Brewery also had amazing pizza.  I am a hardcore pizza fan (it's basically my favorite food on this planet) and was incredibly happy with "The Real Deal" pie that I ordered.  This easily lasted us three meals: lunch for myself, dinner in the hotel room watching the NFL playoffs, and lunch on the drive back home.

My fiance, on the other hand, ordered their delicious "Creole Cuban Press" sandwich, which was composed of slow-roasted Virginia pulled pork, shaved ham, pepper jack cheese, and pickles. He graciously let me try a bite of his panini even though I hogged a whole pizza to myself for lunch. (What can I say? I love food!) I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the food is here.

South Street Brewery, also located in downtown, was our last brewpub stop for the weekend, which was much deserved after I watched my dear Pittsburgh Steelers lose to the Denver Broncos in the playoffs.  (Tear, sniffle.)  Because it was a Sunday night and we walked to the bar after the game, we essentially had the place to ourselves, which was fabulous.

We opted to try everything save their IPAs as we're not big fans of those brews.  However, I was very pleased to see several sours on tap.  Their Devil Fish was my favorite out of their handful of sours.  It's classified as a barrel-aged American wild ale that was turned wild with the addition of  naturally occurring brettanomyces and lactobacillus that are contained in the second-use bourbon barrels.  In addition to Devil Fish, I also really liked Anastasia's Chocolate Fantasy, a Russian imperial stout that's heavy in body and very malt and chocolate forward.

The bottom line is that there's something for everyone at these breweries.  If you don't want to drive out of downtown, take a stroll to South Street and C'Ville-ian breweries.  If you don't mind taking the car out for a spin, Blue Mountain is an excellent choice.
